Established in 2005
Klein Welmoed is a working wine and olive farm nestled in the foothills of the Helderberg mountain range between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, just six kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean and thirty kilometres from Cape Town International Airport. The property spans 39 hectares, of which 18.6 hectares are planted to vineyard, with the balance given to olive groves, Dorper sheep paddocks, and manicured guest gardens.
The farm's roots reach deep into Cape history. The original Klein Welmoed was carved from the larger Welmoed estate when the property was divided between the three Van der Bijl sons in the eighteenth century. Philippus Johannes van der Bijl received the present Klein Welmoed farm, and in 1759 ownership passed to Jan de Villiers. The modern chapter began in 2005 when the estate was established as a boutique winery, and in 2008 Glenn Hesse and Tim Featherby took ownership, bringing fresh energy to both the vineyards and the guest accommodation.
The wine label, Foothills Vineyards, draws its character from the estate's privileged position at the foot of the Helderberg. Cooling afternoon sea breezes from nearby False Bay moderate the warm Stellenbosch days, creating ideal conditions for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Semillon, Shiraz, and Pinot Noir. The estate produces two main ranges. The Dorper range -- named after the sheep that roam the paddocks -- delivers approachable, unfussy wines for everyday enjoyment. The Monogram Collection, inspired by Jack the estate's first sheepdog, represents the more sophisticated and oak-matured end of the portfolio. A dry Rose and a sparkling wine round out the offering.
Beyond the cellar, Klein Welmoed has built a reputation as one of Stellenbosch's most charming guest farm destinations. The elegantly restored Manor House pays homage to classic Cape Dutch architecture and offers four double rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Four modern self-catering cottages, each with two bedrooms, fitted kitchens, and spacious living areas, cater to families and longer stays. A sparkling swimming pool sits in a large manicured garden, and guests have free run of the farm for walking, running, cycling, birdwatching, and picnics among the vines.
Spa treatments including Swedish massage, facials, and body treatments can be arranged on the property. Wine tastings are available by prior arrangement, allowing visitors to explore the range in an intimate farm setting rather than a formal tasting room. The combination of wine, olive oil, guest accommodation, and rural tranquillity within easy reach of both Stellenbosch and the airport has earned Klein Welmoed a loyal following.
