Warwick Wine Estate — Home of the Trilogy, crafted by a pioneer
Established in 1964
The story of Warwick Wine Estate is inseparable from the story of Norma Ratcliffe, one of South Africa's most consequential winemakers. When Norma and her husband Stan acquired the Simonsberg property along the R44 in 1964, the Cape wine industry was overwhelmingly male and commercially conservative. The Ratcliffes waited two patient decades, nurturing their vines like one might raise a child, before releasing their debut wine in 1984 -- the La Femme Bleu Cabernet Sauvignon, a name that announced feminine ambition in a masculine world.
Two years later, in 1986, Norma created the Trilogy: a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc that would become one of South Africa's flagship wines. The Trilogy has been produced continuously for nearly four decades without skipping a single vintage -- an extraordinary record of consistency. The wine has been served at state dinners, featured in James Bond films, and placed on prestigious wine lists worldwide. Norma's achievement was formally recognised in 1989, when she became the first woman inducted into the Cape Winemakers Guild, and again in 1993, when she became the Guild's first female chairperson.
Beyond her cellar talent, Norma proved a gifted marketer. The estate's wine names -- First Lady, Three Cape Ladies, The White Lady, The Blue Lady -- reference Norma herself, her daughter, and her granddaughter, weaving three generations of women into every label. This storytelling approach helped Warwick transcend the local market and build an international brand.
The estate's 60 hectares of vineyards are planted predominantly to Bordeaux cultivars, with Cabernet Sauvignon occupying twenty-five percent of the land, followed by Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Two-thirds of all plantings are red varieties. Heritage South African options include Pinotage and old-vine Chenin Blanc. The property was acquired in 2017 by San Francisco-based Eileses Capital, and Cellarmaster JD Pretorius joined in 2019 to continue the estate's legacy of Cabernet Franc-led fine wine.
The wine portfolio is structured across four tiers that tell the Warwick story. The First Lady range -- named for Norma -- offers accessible, fruit-forward Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Dry Rose at prices starting around R109. The Professor Black range steps up in complexity with a barrel-aged Pitch Black Red Blend and an aromatic Sauvignon Blanc. The Three Cape Ladies blend honours three generations of women, while the pinnacle tier comprises the Trilogy (around R700), The Blue Lady Cabernet Sauvignon, and The White Lady Chardonnay -- wines that reward cellaring for five to ten years.
Visitors to Warwick enjoy gourmet picnics on the lawns, wine safaris by 4x4 through the hillside vineyards, walking tours, and tastings overlooking the Simonsberg mountains. The estate is family-friendly and dog-welcoming, with a relaxed atmosphere that belies the seriousness of the wines in the glass.
Cellarmaster JD Pretorius joined Warwick in 2019, continuing the estate's tradition of crafting Cabernet Franc-led fine wine. He builds on the legacy established by Norma Ratcliffe, who created the Trilogy in 1986 and became the first female member and chairperson of the Cape Winemakers Guild.
