Established in 2009
Where Stellenbosch meets Somerset West, on Strand Road beneath the Helderberg Mountains, Cavalli Estate occupies a singular position in the Cape Winelands -- a property where wine, equestrian heritage, fine dining, contemporary art and world-class events converge on a single, expansive canvas. The name Cavalli is Italian for 'horses,' and the estate's identity is woven through with equestrian imagery, from the horse-themed wine labels to the stud farm that once anchored the property.
The vision belongs to Jerome Smith, who fifteen years ago set out to create something far more ambitious than a conventional wine farm. He imagined a lifestyle destination where every detail -- from the underground gallery with its simulated skylit ceiling to the contemporary architecture reflected in the estate's ornamental waterways -- served a larger artistic purpose. The result is a property rated 4.6 stars by nearly 1,800 visitors and classified by Google as a winery, art gallery, sports venue, wedding venue, event venue and restaurant all at once.
In the cellar, winemaker Rianie Strydom -- a University of Stellenbosch graduate who joined Cavalli after working vintages in Burgundy and the Rhone -- crafts wines that balance Helderberg structure with modern elegance. Her flagship Warlord red blend, a Bordeaux-style assembly of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, earned a 95-point rating from Tim Atkin and multiple accolades. The Reserve White 2024 reached Platter's 5-star glory. The portfolio spans a Lifestyle tier (including the accessible unoaked Chenin Blanc), a Premium tier (Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Malbec), and flagship expressions including the Cremello white blend and Capriole Cap Classique.
Dining at Cavalli is an event in itself. The estate's restaurant, led by chef Lucas Carstens, has earned consecutive Eat Out Stars for contemporary French-influenced cuisine served in a glass-walled space overlooking the dam and mountains. Two-course lunches and multi-course dinners showcase seasonal produce paired with estate wines. Winemaker's Dinners offer intimate encounters with Rianie Strydom and the culinary team.
The estate's event spaces are among the most versatile in the Winelands. The main function venue seats 600 cinema-style in a 450-square-metre contemporary hall with glass surrounds and water views. The underground Gallery provides 600 square metres of dramatic presentation space, while the intimate Conservatory sits right on the water's edge. Cavalli is one of the Cape's most sought-after wedding venues.
Beyond wine and events, Cavalli hosts rotating art exhibitions in its gallery, offers helicopter wine safari experiences, and maintains manicured gardens that burst into life each spring under a dedicated horticultural team. It is an estate that refuses to choose between wine and spectacle -- offering both, at a level that has made it one of the most visited properties in the Western Cape.
Rianie Strydom is a University of Stellenbosch graduate who honed her skills with vintages in Burgundy and the Rhone Valley before joining Cavalli Estate. She focuses on allowing the Helderberg terroir to express itself through structured reds and expressive whites, with the Warlord red blend earning a 95-point Tim Atkin rating and the Reserve White reaching Platter's 5-star status.
