The story of Villion Family Wines begins not in Bot River but in 1671, when Francois Villion became the first French Huguenot to make South Africa his permanent home. His descendant, Jacobus A.S. Viljoen -- known as Kobie -- carries that lineage forward as the founder and winemaker of Villion Family Wines.
Kobie spent over twenty years gaining experience in top South African cellars, earning local and international recognition for the wines he made, before he and his wife Elnette launched their own venture. The focus from the start has been on handcrafted wines from carefully selected vineyards in the Elgin, Bot River and Walker Bay areas -- three of the Cape's most distinctive cool-climate terroirs.
The winery is based at Rooiheuwel Farm in Bot River, on the Botrivier Wine Route. The tasting room, which has both indoor and outdoor seating, is the kind of intimate, personal space where you are likely to meet the winemaker himself. Free door-to-door deliveries are offered in the Overstrand area, reflecting the family's close connection to the local community.
The wines are split into two ranges. The Lifestyle Range offers accessible, everyday wines, while the Premium Range features more complex expressions that showcase the best of what these coastal vineyards can produce. The Henning Chenin Blanc, named after a family member, draws from Bot River fruit, while the Blanc de l'Atlantique is a Cape South Coast wine of distinctive character. A Sauvignon Blanc, Rose, Pinotage and Red Blend round out the Lifestyle Range, each reflecting the cool maritime influence of the Overberg coast.
The Bot River wine route itself is one of the lesser-known gems of the Western Cape. Sitting between the popular Stellenbosch and Hermanus routes, it attracts visitors who prefer smaller producers, quieter tasting rooms and direct contact with the people who make the wine. Villion fits that profile perfectly.
Villion Family Wines is a small, family-driven operation. There are no grand tasting halls or elaborate food offerings. What there is, instead, is a winemaker with Huguenot blood, two decades of cellar experience, and a clear, personal vision: to produce handcrafted wines of international distinction from the cool-climate vineyards of the Overberg.
The decision to source fruit from three distinct areas -- Elgin, Bot River and Walker Bay -- is deliberate. Each area contributes something different: Elgin brings cool-climate precision, Bot River brings warmth and generosity, and Walker Bay brings the mineral edge of proximity to the Atlantic. By blending across these terroirs, Kobie creates wines that are more layered and complex than a single-origin approach would allow.
For visitors on the Bot River wine route, Villion is the kind of discovery that makes the drive worthwhile.
