Truter Wines — Cabernet Sauvignon and more in Wellington
Established in 2013
Hugo and Celeste Truter are a husband-and-wife winemaking team whose combined three decades in the South African wine industry culminated in one of the Western Cape's most personal small-batch labels. Both completed their oenology degrees at Stellenbosch University and spent years honing their craft at established producers before Hugo took the leap into full-time independent winemaking in 2013. Celeste followed in 2017, having spent eight years in wine quality assurance and compliance at Accolade Wines — a background that gives the duo a rare blend of creative ambition and technical precision.
Operating from a modest cellar in Wellington, Truter Family Wines is built on the conviction that the most exciting Cape wines come not from single cultivars but from carefully constructed blends. Hugo and Celeste source grapes and finished wine from across the Western Cape — Stellenbosch, Swartland, Paarl, Robertson — seeking out specific blocks and parcels that express the character of their region. The result is a portfolio structured around three distinct tiers, each named with deliberate intent.
The entry-level Taste range is designed for everyday enjoyment: a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, an easy-drinking Chenin Blanc, a dry Rose, and a smooth Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon blend. These are friendly, approachable wines that punch well above their price point.
The Cape Fern collection steps up in complexity. The Cape Fern Sauvignon Blanc is bright and aromatic, while the Cape Fern Shiraz offers concentrated dark fruit with supple tannins. Both wines reflect careful site selection across multiple Western Cape origins.
At the top sits the Agaat range — named after the semi-precious stone found in the Cape — which represents Hugo and Celeste's most ambitious work. The Agaat John David is a Cape Blend marrying Pinotage, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon, while the Agaat Christina is a Cape White Blend weaving together Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Nouvelle, and Viognier. A Blokhuis Grenache Blanc from old Wellington vines rounds out the premium tier.
There is no tasting room fanfare here, no restaurant or manicured gardens. Truter Family Wines is a working cellar where the focus is entirely on what ends up in the bottle. Tastings are available by appointment at their Wellington base, offering an intimate window into the kind of meticulous, small-scale winemaking that the big estates cannot replicate. For visitors who value authenticity over spectacle, this is the real thing.
