Oude Compagnies Post -- Handcrafted Swanepoel wines from a 1699 Tulbagh outpost
Established in 1995
At the end of a tree-lined dirt road in the Tulbagh Valley, where the Witzenberg mountains rise steeply from rocky southeast-facing slopes, Oude Compagnies Post occupies one of the region's most historically charged pieces of ground. The name traces back to the Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie -- the Dutch East India Company -- which established an outpost here in 1699. For over a century the land was held as a 'buite pos' (government outpost) before being sold to a Theron family descendant by Sir Peregrine Maitland, Governor of the Cape. That founding-era provenance gives the property a lineage few wine farms can match.
The modern chapter begins in 1995, when Jerry Swanepoel, a Cape Town advocate, and his wife Henriette, an attorney, made the unlikely decision to leave their Bantry Bay life and raise their three sons in the countryside. Jerry became a self-taught winemaker, devouring books and wine magazines and learning by doing. His determination bore fruit in 2004 when a Pinotage of his making earned acclaim at the South African Young Wine Show. That wine set the direction: Pinotage would become the soul of the estate, alongside Shiraz and Rhone-style blends suited to Tulbagh's warm, mountain-sheltered terroir.
In 2018, their son Dirk Swanepoel returned to take over winemaking after qualifying in oenology and viticulture at Elsenburg in Stellenbosch and working vintages abroad. Dirk brought formal training to his father's intuitive approach, and together they refined two distinct labels. Compagnies Wijn honours the property's VOC heritage; Swanepoel Wines carries the family name and bolder winemaking ambitions. The range now includes a Red Pinotage aged 18 months in barrel, a distinctive White Pinotage made by early skin removal and six months in oak, a Shiraz aged 24 months in barrel, an SMG blend of Shiraz, Mourvedre and Grenache also aged 24 months, a GPS Rose of Grenache, Pinot Noir and Syrah, an MCC Cap Classique, a Mourvedre, and an Assyrtiko -- the rare Greek white variety that thrives in the estate's rocky mountain soils.
The tasting experience is intimate and personal. A restored stone barn serves as the tasting venue, while private mountain-top tastings with winemaker Dirk offer something altogether more exclusive. The estate's cottage accommodation sits in tranquil surroundings with hiking and cycling routes on the doorstep, spacious rooms with premium linen, and the kind of silence that Bantry Bay never offered. Oude Compagnies Post carries a 4.9-star Google rating from 121 reviews -- among the highest in Tulbagh -- a testament to the warmth of the Swanepoel family hospitality.
Dirk Swanepoel is a qualified winemaker and viticulturist who studied at Elsenburg in Stellenbosch before embarking on international harvests. He returned to the family farm in 2018 to take over from his self-taught father Jerry, who had built the cellar's reputation from scratch since the mid-1990s. Dirk combines formal training with the hands-on, intuitive approach he grew up with, crafting handmade wines under the Swanepoel and Compagnies Wijn labels.
