Ridgeback Wines -- Paarl's premium boutique selections
Established in 2001
Ridgeback Wines takes its name from the Rhodesian Ridgeback dog breed, known for its bravery and resilience in the African bushveld -- qualities the estate seeks to embody in its winemaking. Situated on the northern slopes of the Paarl mountain in the Western Cape, the 65-hectare property was first purchased as a fruit farm and converted to vineyards in 1997. The first wines were released in 2001, and in the years since Ridgeback has established itself as one of Paarl's most decorated boutique producers.
For twenty-five years, winemaker Toit Wessels shaped the Ridgeback style, earning numerous Platter's ratings and international accolades. Among the highlights of his tenure were the Michelangelo Platinum and Double Gold awards. In 2025, after a quarter-century at the helm, Wessels stepped down and Ridgeback welcomed Renier van Deventer as the new Cellar Master. Van Deventer brings global experience, technical mastery, and a deep respect for terroir to lead the next chapter of winemaking on the Paarl estate.
Thirty-five hectares are currently under vine, planted to a wide range of cultivars including Shiraz, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Viognier, and Chenin Blanc. The premium Ridgeback range includes the Signature C -- a structured Bordeaux-style blend -- the Signature S (Shiraz-based), The Journey (a red blend), and acclaimed single-varietal Cabernet Franc and Viognier. The entry-level Vansha range, named after the owner's children Vanessa and Shaun, offers accessible everyday wines.
The tasting room overlooks a small dam home to Koi fish, creating a tranquil setting. Tastings of any five wines cost R125. The Botanicum Restaurant on the estate serves modern European cuisine in a vineyard setting. Ridgeback House offers luxury suite accommodation with fine dining and top-notch service, providing a complete wine country retreat.
The estate retains significant indigenous fynbos and protea vegetation, reflecting its commitment to preserving the natural heritage of the Paarl mountain slopes. Ridgeback is a member of the Paarl Wine Route and has been consistently recognised in the Platter's South African Wine Guide, with multiple wines earning four-star and above ratings in the 2026 edition.
Renier van Deventer is the new Cellar Master at Ridgeback Wines, succeeding founding winemaker Toit Wessels after his 25-year tenure. Van Deventer brings global experience, technical mastery, and a deep respect for terroir. He continues the estate's tradition of hand-harvested, terroir-expressive winemaking on the Paarl mountain slopes.
