Randela Wine was founded in 2021 by Phumla Randela, a first-generation winemaker who brought an unusual background to the South African wine industry. With a B.Com degree in Accounting and a postgraduate certificate in Tax, Phumla spent over eleven years working across insurance, corporate investment banking, mining, engineering, and manufacturing before turning her passion for wine into a business.
The brand operates as an internet-first wine company, based in Fourways, Johannesburg -- far from the traditional wine-producing regions of the Western Cape. Randela Wine sources grapes from established Western Cape vineyards and works with experienced cellar partners to produce premium quality wines that carry Phumla's name and vision.
The flagship wine is the Phumla Red Blend, named after the founder herself, crafted from Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The blend is designed to be rich, approachable, and expressive -- a wine that reflects the ambition and warmth of the person behind it. In 2023, Randela Wine was recognised as Most Premium Quality Wine Producer in South Africa, a notable achievement for such a young brand.
Randela Wine does not operate a traditional wine estate with a cellar door or tasting room in the winelands. The business model is built around direct-to-consumer online sales and trade distribution, making the wines accessible to customers across South Africa and internationally. The company has bootstrapped its growth entirely without external funding.
As a Black-owned, female-founded wine brand entering its fifth year of production, Randela Wine represents the new generation of South African wine entrepreneurship -- digital-first, quality-focused, and unbound by the traditional estate model.
