Established in 1999
Groote Post is one of those rare estates where the history is as rich as the wine. The homestead, built in 1808, was once the only genuine shooting box of Lord Charles Somerset, the British governor who ruled the Cape Colony from 1814 to 1826. Later, the property became home to Hildagonda Duckitt, the celebrated South African cookbook author whose recipes defined Cape colonial cuisine. The name itself — Groote Post, meaning 'Great Post' — reflects the property's historical role as a significant waypoint in the Cape's colonial postal network.
The Pentz family's connection to the land runs through three generations and began not with wine but with dairy. Peter Pentz's grandfather established the Union Dairy in Cape Town in 1904, developing herds across Tokai, Philippi, and eventually Darling. The family acquired Groote Post in 1972 and later added the historic Klawer Valley farm, creating a combined estate of 2,800 hectares in the Darling Hills along the West Coast — a vast property that remains one of the largest privately held farms in the Western Cape.
The pivot to wine came in the late 1990s, when the family recognised the cool-climate potential of their Darling Hills vineyards. The maiden vintage was released in 1999, and the estate quickly established a reputation for elegant, terroir-driven wines that benefited from the maritime influence of the nearby Atlantic. Winemaker Lukas Wentzel, who has been with Groote Post since 2000, has been the steady hand in the cellar through more than two decades of vintages.
Groote Post has always been best known for its Sauvignon Blanc, but in recent years the broader portfolio has gained significant recognition. The Seasalter — a flagship blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, with half the Sauvignon Blanc fermented and aged in French oak — has become one of the most acclaimed white wines on the West Coast. The Kapokberg Chardonnay, Old Man's Blend White and Red, and single-varietal Shiraz, Pinot Noir, and Merlot all demonstrate the range of what cool-climate Darling can deliver. Two Methode Cap Classique sparkling wines, a Brut and a Brut Rose, round out an impressive portfolio.
Three generations now work the farm together: Peter Pentz Sr, his son Nick Pentz, and grandson Peter Pentz Jr. The estate has retained its agricultural diversity — this is still very much a working farm — while the wine operation has grown into a destination. Hilda's Kitchen restaurant serves modern country cuisine, the picnic baskets are a summer institution, and the property offers walking trails, bird watching, and game viewing across its sweeping Darling Hills landscape. The estate is dog-friendly, family-welcoming, and open six days a week. It is a place where three centuries of Cape history meet three generations of Pentz family stewardship, and where the cool West Coast wind carries the scent of fynbos and the promise of exceptional wine.
