In 2014, Moyagabo Anna Seemola did something few had done before her: she launched a Black, female-owned wine brand from the township of Atteridgeville in Pretoria, far from the established vineyards of the Western Cape. She named it Pheli Wines, after the local shorthand for Atteridgeville -- derived from the Zulu word 'Phelindaba,' meaning 'end of the story.' But for Moyagabo, it was only the beginning.
Pheli Wines was built on three pillars: community, heritage, and female-led excellence. Moyagabo sourced grapes from the Western Cape winelands and crafted wines that carried the names and spirit of Atteridgeville's neighbourhoods. The Black Rock Syrah is named after the Black Rock area of Atteridgeville. The Oudstad Sauvignon Blanc takes its name from another well-known section of the township. The Ten Morgen Cabernet Sauvignon references the historic land measurement used in the area. Each bottle is a bridge between the winelands where the grapes grow and the community where the brand was born.
Today, the torch is carried by Moyagabo's family. Her daughter Oratile brings a sophisticated palate and entrepreneurial energy, having earned her WSET Level 1 wine qualification. Evelyn, Moyagabo's sister, manages the tasting room experience. Ofentse, an aspiring fashion designer, expands the Pheli legacy into creative arts and brand expression. It remains a genuine family operation where youthful creativity and modern ambition blend with the timeless traditions the founder established.
The wine range has expanded beyond the original two releases to include a Chardonnay and the Ten Morgen Cabernet Sauvignon. The style is approachable and fruit-forward, designed to welcome new wine drinkers while offering enough depth to satisfy more experienced palates. Pheli Wines has been recognised by Wines of South Africa as a notable Black-owned brand and has attracted attention as part of the broader movement to make the South African wine scene, in the words of international press, 'less pale and male.'
Pheli Wines does not operate a traditional wine estate with vineyards and a cellar door in the winelands. The tasting room is in Atteridgeville itself, at 167 Semenya Street -- a deliberate choice that keeps the brand rooted in the community that inspired it. Visitors are welcome to taste the range and experience the story firsthand. The wines are also available for purchase online through the Pheli Wines website.
As one of South Africa's pioneering Black female-owned wine labels, now entering its second decade of production, Pheli Wines represents something larger than any single bottle. It is proof that great wine can come from unexpected places, and that the South African wine industry has room for every voice.
