Nitida Wine Farm — Bordeaux Blend / Cape Blend and Cap Classique in Western Cape
Established in 1990
How does a small Durbanville property running a flock of fifty sheep, two cows, and a sheepdog become one of South Africa's most celebrated boutique wine cellars? At Nitida, this fairy tale was written with a blend of very special ingredients and a series of happy coincidences.
The story begins in 1990, when Bernhard Veller, a qualified engineer, and his wife Peta purchased the smallest farm in the Durbanville Wine Valley — a modest property on Tygerberg Valley Road that they bought simply 'to live on.' Peta's mother, the family's beloved 'Matriarch,' helped finance the farm, and her legacy lives on in Nitida's flagship Cap Classique that bears her name. In 1991, the Vellers found a 1971 Ford tractor they promptly named Pufford, and Klaas, who taught them how to milk a cow and chase down sheep. The final, most essential element was energy and wonderful people.
In 1992, Bernhard took a week off work so he, Klaas, and Pufford could plant a couple of vineyards. The plan was to make only a few barrels. Three years later, that modest ambition was overtaken by reality: Nitida won its first double-gold for Sauvignon Blanc in 1995, and by 2001 the cellar was recognised as a benchmark Semillon producer. The farm's name comes from Protea nitida (the Waboom tree) that grows in the garden, and the labels themselves tell the story of the land — hand-drawn illustrations created with inks made from Nitida tree leaves, featuring local Renosterveld plants and the creatures who share the farm: the Cape Eagle Owl, Cape Clawless Otter, Golden Orb spider, Yellow-billed Duck, and Cape Cobra. West Coast Renosterveld is critically endangered, with only an estimated three percent remaining, and Nitida's commitment to its preservation is woven into the estate's identity.
Situated in the heart of the Durbanville Wine Valley, Nitida is a family-owned and operated wine cellar where being handmade is more than a physical process — it is about perfecting the small details along the way while treating each batch of juice with respect throughout its journey from vine to bottle. 'We completely believe that beautiful wines come from day-to-day thoughtful management in the vineyards,' says the team. During harvest, although they do not discount analyses, they pick on the tried-and-true indicators of flavour and appearance. Every bunch of grapes is picked by hand, choosing only the very best. The team inspects vineyards daily to ensure leaves, buds, and bunches are healthy, and to check that the spiders and ladybirds are alive and well.
Winemaker Helgard van Schalkwyk joined the Nitida family in September 2023, bringing fifteen years of winemaking experience and a deep love for cool-climate grapes. A Capetonian born and bred, Helgard graduated from Stellenbosch University in 2008 with a B.Agric in Winemaking, then gained international experience making Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand before returning to South Africa. He honed his craft at Lynx Wines in Franschhoek over a decade, rising from Assistant Winemaker to General Manager, before moving to Altydgedacht Wine Estate in Durbanville where he rediscovered his love for cool-climate winemaking and the remarkable diversity of Sauvignon Blanc. His philosophy is straightforward: 'The wine starts in the vineyards. Look after them and great wine will follow.'
Today Nitida is as much a lifestyle destination as a working cellar. Two restaurants — Cassia and Tables at Nitida — offer distinct dining experiences. The estate features a wellness offering with pamper rooms, yoga, and forest retreats. A cannon station preserves historical cannons at the foot of Hoogenberg. The tasting room, built inside the barrel maturation cellar where they dug into the hill to create the space, gives guests a view of the farm's soil profile and keeps things naturally cool in summer. It is the perfect combination of natural beauty, rustic charm, and an intimate, authentic tasting experience. Nitida is dog-friendly, kid-friendly, and fully wheelchair accessible — a true family destination in the Durbanville Wine Valley.
Helgard van Schalkwyk is a born-and-bred Capetonian who grew up in Kuils River surrounded by the Winelands. He graduated from Stellenbosch University in 2008 with a B.Agric in Winemaking and immediately headed to New Zealand to gain international experience making Sauvignon Blanc. Longing for the intimacy of a small cellar, he returned to South Africa and joined Lynx Wines in Franschhoek in 2010 as Assistant Winemaker, eventually rising to General Manager/Winemaker over a decade. After moving to Altydgedacht Wine Estate in Durbanville around 2020, he discovered his love for cool-climate winemaking and the remarkable diversity of Sauvignon Blanc. He joined Nitida in September 2023 and has continued the legacy of creating award-winning wines with minimal intervention, allowing the wines to express their micro-climate. His philosophy: 'The wine starts in the vineyards. Look after them and great wine will follow. As they say in Masterchef, continuously taste — it is the only way to know if you are on the right track.'
