Established in 1987
In the Agter Paarl valley, where French Huguenots first planted vines in 1688, a property originally named Wittenberg was one of the earliest farms chosen for grape cultivation in 1692. Nearly three centuries later, in 1987, Alan Nelson acquired the neglected farms from a bankrupt estate and began the patient work of restoration that would become Nelson Wine Estate.
Between 1987 and 1994, Alan and his team replaced approximately fifty hectares of old vines with noble cultivars including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Pinotage, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Semillon. A state-of-the-art cellar was constructed between 1993 and 1995 with guidance from Elsenburg oenologist Eugene van Zyl. Wine production commenced in earnest in 1995, and the very next year the estate won Best Chardonnay in South Africa and was crowned Champion Private Wine Producer in the Boland region.
The Nelson family story deepened when Alan's eldest daughter Lisha graduated top of her class from Stellenbosch University and returned to the estate as winemaker. In 2007 she began producing wines under her own name, becoming one of the first female winemakers in South Africa to release a signature range. The Lisha Nelson Signature Wines, including a distinctive Cabernet Franc, have earned critical acclaim and brought fresh energy to the estate's portfolio. Alan's son Daniel is also active in running the estate, making this a true multi-generational family operation.
Beyond wine, Nelson Estate has become one of the Paarl valley's most sought-after wedding and function venues. Three distinct spaces cater to celebrations of every scale: The Mountain View accommodates up to 350 guests with sweeping views of the Stellenbosch and Du Toitskloof mountains; The Lapa seats 110 overlooking the gardens and pool; and The Old Cellar, a thatched-roof structure dating to circa 1687, provides intimate old-world charm for up to forty guests.
Accommodation includes twelve standard overnight rooms and five luxury suites, anchored by the magnificent Honeymoon Suite known as The Stables. Alan Nelson's personal passion for Friesian horses and carriage driving adds a unique dimension to the estate. A Landau carriage imported from Holland, drawn by beautiful Friesians, provides spectacular transport for bridal parties and guests. Alan is developing Olympic-standard facilities on the estate for carriage driving competitions.
With over three centuries of viticultural heritage, a winemaking daughter who represents the new generation of South African wine talent, and a family patriarch whose love of horses infuses the property with character, Nelson Wine Estate is where Paarl's Huguenot past meets a distinctly personal present.
Lisha Nelson graduated top of her class from Stellenbosch University and returned to the family estate to take on the role of winemaker in 2007. She is one of the first female winemakers in South Africa to produce a range under her own name. Her Lisha Nelson Signature Wines, including a notable Cabernet Franc, have brought critical acclaim and a fresh, modern sensibility to the estate's portfolio.
