Established in 1850
High on the slopes above Franschhoek, where the Dassenberg Road climbs toward the mountain pass, Mont Rochelle commands one of the most coveted views in the Cape Winelands. From its terraces the panorama unfolds across the entire Franschhoek Valley — a patchwork of vineyards, olive groves and oak-lined avenues framed by the Groot Drakenstein and Simonsberg mountains. It was this view, and the quality of the terroir beneath it, that drew Sir Richard Branson to acquire the property in 2014 as part of his Virgin Limited Edition portfolio of exclusive retreats.
But the story of winemaking here reaches back much further. The farm was established in the 1850s as a traditional wine cellar, and vines have been cultivated on these slopes for well over a century. Today the estate covers a substantial spread of mountain-facing vineyards planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah — varieties that thrive in the cooler elevations and well-drained granitic soils that define this corner of Franschhoek.
Winemaker Michael Langenhoven brings a worldly perspective to the cellar. He honed his craft at Boschendal and La Motte in Franschhoek before venturing to France's Rhone Valley and Sancerre, then to Dry Creek Vineyards in California. That breadth of experience shows in wines that balance Old World restraint with New World generosity. The cellar processes nearly 150 tons of grapes each season, producing a focused range under two tiers: the Mont Rochelle collection of varietal wines and the premium MIKO line — named after the estate's celebrated fine-dining restaurant. Langenhoven's proudest achievement to date is a Double Gold at the prestigious VERITAS Wine Awards.
The current releases reflect the estate's range and ambition. The Mont Rochelle Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay 2025 show crisp, expressive fruit from the cool mountain vineyards, while the Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah 2023 demonstrate the reds' capacity for structured, age-worthy complexity. The Little Rock Rouge 2023 — a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah — offers an accessible introduction to the estate's red winemaking. At the top of the range, the MIKO Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc 2022 and MIKO Chardonnay 2024 represent the best parcels from the estate's finest vineyard blocks.
Dining is central to the Mont Rochelle experience. MIKO Restaurant serves contemporary cuisine with breathtaking valley views, where creative cooking meets award-winning estate wines in a setting that is simultaneously elegant and relaxed. The Country Kitchen offers a more casual alternative, serving fresh South African fare in the estate grounds — and it doubles as a venue for the popular Winemaker's Dinner, where Langenhoven guides guests through a cellar tour followed by a five-course pairing dinner crafted by Executive Chef Terence Morris.
The twenty-six-bedroom luxury hotel occupies beautifully restored Cape Dutch buildings and contemporary additions, with rooms and suites offering mountain and vineyard views. Complimentary wine tasting is included for hotel guests. The estate sits on the Franschhoek Wine Tram route and offers walking tours through the vineyards, making it accessible both as a day visit and as an immersive overnight stay. Mont Rochelle is that rare thing: a working wine estate where the hospitality matches the ambition of the cellar, and where Branson's instinct for experiential luxury meets a winemaking heritage that predates him by more than a century and a half.
