Established in 1903
Molteno Brothers (Pty) Ltd is a farming business rooted in one of the most storied agricultural families in South African history. The original Molteno Brothers -- Edward (1877-1950) and Harry (1880-1969) -- were sons of Cape Prime Minister John Molteno by his third wife, Sobella Maria. Pioneering fruit exporters, they had a transformative influence on South Africa's deciduous fruit industry and acquired the farm Glen Elgin in the cool-climate Elgin Valley in 1903.
Today, Molteno Brothers operates primarily as a fruit farming enterprise. The property is a shareholder in the Fruitways Group, a major South African fruit packing, marketing, and export operation. The Molteno Brothers Charitable Trust, established after Harry Molteno's death in 1970, holds the business and its assets. Fruitways began marketing the trust's fruit in 2005, cementing the connection between these two entities.
The wine dimension of Molteno Brothers is the Winters Drift brand, established in 2010. The name references the 'winter ford' -- a crossing of the Palmiet River on Glen Elgin farm that was part of the original ox wagon trail through the Overberg. The first vintage in 2010 released Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and a Merlot Rose. Shiraz and Pinot Noir were added in 2011. The cultivars planted on the property include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, Viognier, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Grenache, and Mourvedre -- a broad palette suited to Elgin's cool maritime climate.
The Winters Drift Shiraz gained particular recognition when it was listed on British Airways flights. However, wine production appears to be a secondary activity to the core fruit farming and packing operation. Visitor reviews on TripAdvisor note the wines with enthusiasm but suggest the operation may have scaled back. Molteno Brothers is best understood as a historical Elgin fruit farm with a small wine label, not a dedicated wine tourism destination.
