MAN Family Wines — Cabernet Sauvignon and more in Western Cape
Established in 2001
MAN Family Wines began in 2001 with a simple idea and a tractor shed. Winemaker Jose Conde of Stark-Conde Wines and brothers Tyrrel and Philip Myburgh of Joostenberg Wines decided to pool their expertise and create wines together from the Agter-Paarl region. They named the venture MAN, taking the first initials of their wives — Marie, Anette and Nicky.
The debut was modest: 600 cases of Pinotage made in a small tractor shed. But the wines resonated immediately. Built on a philosophy of sustainable grape-growing and meticulous winemaking applied at scale, MAN grew rapidly. Today the winery produces over 250,000 cases annually and exports to more than 30 countries, sourcing 95% of its grapes from around 30 farmers in the Agter-Paarl region.
What makes MAN distinctive is the pedigree behind the accessibility. Both Jose Conde and Tyrrel Myburgh come from backgrounds in artisanal, small-batch winemaking — Conde is one of South Africa's most respected red wine makers through Stark-Conde — and their goal with MAN was to apply that experience and attention to quality at a larger scale without losing authenticity. Each wine in the range carries a name rooted in the South African landscape and farming vernacular.
The Free-Run Steen Chenin Blanc takes its name from the traditional Afrikaans word for Chenin Blanc and the gentle free-run juice method. The Bosstok Pinotage is made from old bush vine Pinotage from Paarl — 'bosstok' meaning bush vine. The Ou Kalant Cabernet Sauvignon references a laid-back attitude. The Skaapveld Syrah — 'sheep field' — uses grapes from premium, un-irrigated vineyards in Agter-Paarl where sheep once grazed, producing concentrated fruit with distinctive minerality. The Jan Fiskaal Merlot is named after the fiscal shrike bird, a common sight in the vineyards. Warrelwind Sauvignon Blanc, Padstal Chardonnay, Hanekraai Rose and a Brut MCC complete a range that offers genuine quality at accessible prices.
MAN does not operate a traditional estate cellar door, but the wines are widely available across South Africa and internationally. For value-conscious wine lovers seeking authentic Coastal Region wines with real winemaking pedigree behind them, MAN consistently over-delivers.
The name tells the story: Marie, Anette and Nicky — three women whose initials became one of South Africa's most exported wine brands. Behind the accessibility is genuine craft. The Bosstok old bush vine Pinotage captures the character of Paarl's weathered vineyards, while the Skaapveld Syrah delivers a concentration and minerality that belies its price point. From a tractor shed to thirty countries, MAN is proof that ambition and authenticity need not be at odds.
Jose Conde co-founded MAN in 2001 alongside Tyrrel and Philip Myburgh. Conde is also the winemaker behind Stark-Conde Wines, one of South Africa's most acclaimed red wine producers. His artisanal background drives MAN's commitment to quality at every price point, sourcing from established Agter-Paarl growers.
