Lothian of Elgin — Pinot Noir and more in Elgin
Lothian of Elgin sits on the banks of the Palmiet River in the heart of the Elgin Valley, an architectural masterpiece overlooking a private lake and surrounded by some of the most pristine fynbos on earth. The estate belongs to Gavin and Ewen Wilson, brothers from a Scottish family with three generations of Cape winemaking in their blood. They grew up on their grandmother's Rust en Vrede vineyard in the 1950s and 60s, absorbing the rhythms of viticulture long before they ever imagined owning their own farm.
For years, the Wilson brothers sold their grapes to Waterkloof, content to let others vinify the fruit from their 13 hectares of cool-climate vines. But the quality of the terroir — Elgin's high altitude, its proximity to the cold Atlantic, and the unique microclimate created by the Palmiet River corridor — eventually demanded its own expression. They chose Richard Kershaw, a Master of Wine and one of the most respected winemakers in the southern hemisphere, to bring Lothian's vineyards to life in bottle.
The result is a focused range of Burgundian-inspired wines: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, dry Riesling, and a sophisticated single-cultivar Rose from Mourvedre. Kershaw's approach is meticulous and minimalist, preserving clonal characteristics and fruit integrity so that each wine speaks unmistakably of Lothian's terroir. The Pinot Noir in particular has earned international acclaim for its elegance and complexity, a cool-climate expression that stands among the finest in the Cape.
Lothian House is a luxury eight-bedroom retreat where each room is individually styled with en-suite bathrooms, private balconies, and views across the river, vineyards, and mountains. A full-time chef, concierge, and staff attend to every detail. The main dining table seats sixteen, making the house ideal for intimate celebrations and corporate retreats alike.
The estate lies within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, home to over 1,600 plant species found nowhere else on earth. The architecture has been designed with deep sensitivity to this landscape — a contemporary masterpiece that treads lightly on ancient ground. Walking trails lead through fynbos to the dam, and the vineyards themselves are managed with a commitment to preserving the biodiversity that makes Elgin extraordinary. For visitors seeking the intersection of world-class wine, luxury, and wild natural beauty, Lothian is without equal in the Cape.
