Established in 1992
L'Avenir's history stretches back to the late 1600s, when the estate was among the very first sites identified for grape growing by the Cape's earliest European settlers. For three centuries the land changed hands without distinction, until 1992, when Mauritian businessman Mark Wiehe left a career trading sugar in London to purchase the farm. He renamed it L'Avenir — French for 'the future' — and set about transforming it into a specialist boutique winery.
Wiehe's first and most consequential decision was to appoint Francois Naude, a former pharmacist turned winemaker, to run the cellar. Naude zeroed in on two varietals that would define the estate: Pinotage, South Africa's signature red grape, and Chenin Blanc, the Cape's most versatile white. Within a few vintages, L'Avenir had built a reputation for converting sceptics into committed Pinotage lovers — producing wines that captured the grape's fruit and perfume without the rustic edges that had plagued earlier South African examples.
In 2005, the estate was acquired by Michel Laroche, owner of the prestigious Chablis domaine Laroche. The French connection deepened in 2012 when the Laroche and JeanJean families combined their wine interests to form Advini, one of France's largest wine groups. L'Avenir joined a portfolio of acclaimed properties spanning Burgundy, the Rhone, Languedoc and South Africa, gaining access to French winemaking expertise while retaining its distinctly South African identity.
Dirk Coetzee has been winemaker since 2008, bringing international harvest experience from Australia, California and France. The wine portfolio is structured in three tiers. The Estate range offers approachable Pinotage and Chenin Blanc. The Provenance collection — the estate's best-known tier — showcases barrel-fermented expressions including the Provenance Pinotage and Provenance Chenin Blanc. At the summit, the Single Block wines are drawn from specific vineyard parcels: a dense, concentrated Pinotage and an age-worthy Chenin Blanc that ranks among the finest in Stellenbosch.
Four kilometres from the town of Stellenbosch on the slopes of Simonsberg Mountain, L'Avenir also operates a 4-star Country Lodge — an intimate guesthouse with rim-flow pool overlooking the estate's lakes, complimentary wine tasting, mountain biking and trail running through the vineyards, and home-cooked breakfasts on the deck. The tasting room, inspired by French bistro culture, offers classic Provenance tastings, exclusive Single Block experiences, and a cheese and wine pairing with five South African cheeses. For a truly memorable approach, an exclusive helicopter partnership with Cape Town Helicopters allows visitors to fly in from the V&A Waterfront for a private tasting.
Dirk Coetzee has led L'Avenir's cellar since 2008, bringing a worldview shaped by harvests in Australia, California and France. His winemaking style balances the concentration and warmth of Stellenbosch fruit with the precision and restraint he absorbed from his French mentors, producing Pinotage and Chenin Blanc that are both distinctly South African and internationally refined.
