Karusa Wines Craft Brewery & Spirits — Pinotage and more in Western Cape
Established in 2004
Karusa is the first and only premium private winery in Oudtshoorn, tucked into the tranquil village of Schoemanshoek on the road to the world-famous Cango Caves. The name itself is a Khoi-San word meaning 'land with little water,' an apt description of the semi-arid plateau of the Klein Karoo where rainfall is scarce, summers are fierce, and only the hardiest vines survive.
The story begins in 2004 when the original farm, Vogelsang, was purchased and a comprehensive soil and climate research project was undertaken. This was not a vanity purchase or an impulsive planting: the team studied the terroir exhaustively before making any decisions about cultivars and clonal selections. The result was a vineyard uniquely suited to Mediterranean-styled varieties that thrive in hot, dry conditions rather than fighting them.
Karusa is a family operation through and through. Jacques Conradie serves as winemaker and marketing lead, his wife Saretha Conradie handles public relations, Theo Landman manages the estate, and property owner Johann Landman acts as business consultant. Conradie describes himself as a lifelong student, constantly inquisitive, reading, exploring, and experimenting. His restless curiosity led him to plant Petite Sirah, a variety almost unknown in South Africa, and the gamble paid off spectacularly: the Double Black Petite Sirah won the Unusual Red Wine Trophy at the 2013 Klein Karoo/Southern Cape Bottled Wine Show.
The wine portfolio spans four collections across 10 hectares of vineyard. The Terroir Specific Collection includes the Double Black Petite Sirah, One Tree Hill Pinotage (named for a wild olive tree left standing in the vineyard as testimony to sustainable farming), Terre Noire Syrah (meaning 'black earth,' after the Swartberg mountains and the organic-rich soil), and Southern Slope Sauvignon Blanc. The Reserve Collection features the Earth's Art Chardonnay/Viognier and The 5th Element Syrah/Viognier co-ferment. The Karoo Classique Collection offers MCC sparkling wines including a Prestige Cuvee Blanc de Blanc. The Lifestyle Collection provides accessible everyday wines.
The Klein Karoo is not an obvious wine region, and that is precisely what makes Karusa compelling. Where most South African wineries benefit from maritime cooling, Karusa contends with scorching summers, frigid winter nights, and minimal rainfall. The vines respond with deep roots, small berries, and intense concentration — producing wines with a warmth and generosity that is distinctly Karoo.
Beyond wine, Karusa pioneered the first full-grain microbrewery in the Klein Karoo, producing six craft beers alongside 21 wines and a growing spirits range. The tasting facility occupies an intimate, rustically styled room dating from the late 1800s that opens onto a wine garden with views of the surrounding mountains. A restaurant serves Karoo-style tapas and rustic pizzas made with the freshest local ingredients, and self-catering farm cottages offer overnight stays among orchards and vineyards.
Jacques Conradie is a partner and winemaker at Karusa who describes himself as a lifelong student, constantly inquisitive and experimenting. His willingness to plant unusual varieties like Petite Sirah in the Klein Karoo has earned trophy-winning results. He manages both winemaking and marketing for the family business.
