Established in 1704
The story of J.C. Le Roux begins with a French Huguenot named Jean le Roux, a viticulturist from Normandy who started planting vines shortly after settling in Stellenbosch in 1704. Nearly three centuries later, in 1982, the House of J.C. Le Roux was established as South Africa's first dedicated sparkling wine cellar, taking its name from that pioneering settler and planting its roots firmly in the fertile Devon Valley.
From its inception, J.C. Le Roux set out to do one thing exceptionally well: make sparkling wine. While most South African estates produce sparkling wines as a sideline to their still wine ranges, J.C. Le Roux devoted its entire operation to the art of bubbles. The cellar specialises in Methode Cap Classique — the traditional method of secondary fermentation in the bottle — alongside charmat and carbonation techniques for its broader range. This singular focus has made it the country's leading house of sparkling wine.
Cellarmaster Elunda Basson oversees the production of a diverse range that spans from everyday celebrations to serious collector-quality Cap Classique. The flagship Scintilla is a prestige cuvee made from equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, aged for thirty-four months on the lees, and has been recognised as the Best Sparkling Wine in South Africa. The La Vallee range showcases Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in both white and rose expressions, while the Vivante selection — including the popular Le Domaine — offers accessible sparkling wines that combine Sauvignon Blanc finesse with Muscadel sweetness for a fresh, fruit-forward style.
The House of J.C. Le Roux has positioned itself as 'The Home of Celebration,' and the Devon Valley estate delivers on that promise. The tasting room offers creative food-and-wine pairings in an upscale setting with sweeping views across the Stellenbosch mountains. Cellar tours walk visitors through the entire sparkling wine process, from riddling racks to disgorgement. Picnics are available on the manicured lawns for families and groups, and a restaurant serves light meals designed to complement the sparkling range.
Set on Devon Valley Road just minutes from Stellenbosch town, J.C. Le Roux occupies a sprawling estate that feels grand in scale — fitting for a cellar that has done more than any other to put South African sparkling wine on the map. Whether it is a casual glass of Le Domaine on the terrace or a vertical tasting of Scintilla vintages, this is the definitive destination for Cap Classique in the Cape.
