Jacaranda Wine & Guest Farm — Rooted in Wellington since 2020
Established in 2010
At the foot of Groenberg Mountain in Wellington, where the Breede River Valley opens to the sky, Jacaranda Wine & Guest Farm occupies one of the smallest registered wine estates in South Africa. Just 3.2 hectares under vine, producing between 20,000 and 25,000 bottles a year -- intimate by any measure, and deliberately so.
The owners arrived at Jacaranda after nearly two decades living and working in China and across Asia. When they finally found the property they had always been looking for, they set about a comprehensive restoration: replanting the vineyard, renovating the holiday cottages and the Cape Dutch manor house, and building a new cellar from scratch. The farm takes its name from the abundant Jacaranda trees that frame the manor house and vineyard, their purple canopy becoming a local landmark each spring.
The vineyard is planted to Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Mourvedre -- varietals that thrive in Wellington's warm days and cool mountain nights. Winemaking follows a philosophy of minimal intervention: natural vineyard management, wild fermentation, low sulphites, and careful barrel selection. Every bottle is handcrafted from vine to bottle. The wines are arranged in three tiers. The Harvest Range offers the approachable Horizon Chenin Blanc and the brooding Night Shift red. The Artisanal Range pushes boundaries with the Incognito Viognier Chenin Blanc blend and the co-fermented Rebel Shiraz Viognier. The Reserve Range delivers the estate's finest expressions: No 47 Syrah, from a single vineyard block, and Salt Old Vine Chenin Blanc, sourced from weathered bush vines.
Beyond the cellar, Jacaranda operates as a genuine guest farm. Two self-catering properties -- the Jacaranda Cottage and the Chai Holiday House -- sit among the vines, offering guests a quiet retreat with a saltwater pool, mountain views, and the company of the farm's dogs, cats, and chickens. French-inspired cuisine rounds out the experience, making this a place where winemaking, hospitality, and rural life converge.
What makes Jacaranda remarkable is its refusal to scale. In a region where estates compete on volume, this farm competes on character. The wines tell a story of the year they were made, the soil they grew from, and the people who tended the vines -- and that story is told in whispers, not shouts.

The estate's founders serve as hands-on winemakers, applying a philosophy of minimal intervention honed during years of studying winemaking traditions. Their approach centres on wild fermentation, low sulphites, and careful barrel selection across the 3.2-hectare vineyard.
The story of Jacaranda Wine & Guest Farm through the years
The founders, returning from nearly 20 years abroad in China and Asia, purchase the Wellington property and begin comprehensive restoration.
After replanting the vineyard and building a new cellar from scratch, Jacaranda releases its first wines under its own label.
Jacaranda follows sustainable farming methods across its compact vineyard, crediting these practices with producing natural and expressive wines. The estate's small scale minimises environmental impact, and the integrated farm environment -- with resident animals, indigenous birdlife, and organic garden areas -- reflects a holistic approach to the land.
