Steenberg Vineyards — Crafting wines since 1682
Established in 1682
Steenberg is the oldest registered farm in the Constantia Valley, granted in 1682 to Catharina Ras -- one of the most remarkable figures in Cape colonial history. Catharina arrived at the Cape as a young German immigrant and was widowed five times before the age of forty, each chapter of her life bringing new hardship and new resilience. She petitioned Governor Simon van der Stel for the land herself, naming it 'Steenberg' after the stone mountains that shelter the valley, and planted the first vines on soils that would prove to be among the finest in the southern hemisphere for cool-climate viticulture.
The estate's modern renaissance began when the Beck Family, also the force behind Graham Beck wines, acquired Steenberg and invested in restoring the property to its former stature. Today the farm operates as a complete luxury destination: a five-star hotel with private villas, two acclaimed restaurants, a championship golf course, a spa, and a cellar that has quietly built one of South Africa's most distinguished reputations for white wine.
Cellarmaster Elunda Basson leads the winemaking team, recently joined by assistant winemaker Thabile Cele. Together they work with vineyards that benefit from Constantia's unique microclimate: proximity to both the Atlantic and Indian oceans moderates temperatures, while the ancient granite and sandstone soils of the Steenberg terroir provide the mineral backbone that gives these wines their distinctive character. The flagship Magna Carta -- a Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blend produced only in exceptional years -- has earned five stars in the Platter's Wine Guide and stands as one of South Africa's finest white blends. The Black Swan Sauvignon Blanc, also a five-star recipient, ages remarkably for ten to twenty years, defying the conventional wisdom that Sauvignon Blanc is meant for early drinking.
The estate's wine range is structured across three tiers. The Sparkling wines include the 1682 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Rosé Cap Classiques alongside the prestige Lady R cuvée and a playful Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc. The Classic Range offers accessible expressions of Sauvignon Blanc, barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and the Five Lives Red Blend -- named after the five chapters of Catharina Ras's extraordinary life. The Flagship Range delivers the estate's most serious wines: the Black Swan Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Nebbiolo (a rarity in South Africa), and the Catharina Red Blend. At the pinnacle sits the Icon-tier Magna Carta.
Steenberg's two restaurants are destinations in their own right. Bistro Sixteen82, named for the estate's founding year, pioneered South Africa's first restaurant-supported fishery in partnership with ABALOBI, sourcing sustainable traceable seafood from small-scale local fishers. Executive Chef Kerry Kilpin curates seasonal menus, including the Journey of the Sensori series exploring food through the five senses. Tryn, the estate's more relaxed restaurant, serves seasonal dishes on the vineyard lawns, hosting everything from winter dining series to Christmas carols under the stars.
The Steenberg Hotel comprises 24 private villas set among the vineyards and gardens, each appointed with art masterpieces and luxury finishes. The Steenberg Spa offers wellness retreats and treatments, while the estate's walking trails, helicopter experiences, and proximity to Constantia's wine route and Kirstenbosch Gardens complete the offering. Tim Atkin MW has shortlisted Steenberg for Best Cellar Door, and the estate continues to host signature events including garden parties, winemaker dinners, and the annual Women's Month celebrations honouring the legacy of Catharina Ras.
Elunda Basson serves as Cellarmaster at Steenberg, leading the winemaking programme with a focus on cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Bordeaux-style blends. In 2025, Thabile Cele joined as Assistant Winemaker. Together they craft wines that express the Constantia terroir's ancient granite and sandstone soils, with the Magna Carta white blend and Black Swan Sauvignon Blanc as their pinnacle achievements.
