Holden Manz Wine Estate — Cabernet Sauvignon and more in Franschhoek
Established in 2010
In the heart of the Franschhoek Valley, framed by the dramatic peaks of the Groot Drakenstein mountains, Holden Manz Wine Estate stands as a testament to what happens when British determination meets German precision in one of the world's most beautiful wine regions. Founded in 2010 by Gerard Holden and Migo Manz, the estate occupies a property previously known as Klein Genot -- a name that translates to 'little pleasure' -- and its transformation into a luxury wine, dining, and accommodation destination has been anything but small.
The name Holden Manz combines the surnames of its founders, while the estate's logo -- a screen-printed elephant -- pays homage to Franschhoek's earliest history. Long before the French Huguenots arrived in the 1680s, this valley was known as Oliphantshoek, the corner of the elephants, where wild herds once roamed the indigenous bush. That sense of history and place permeates everything the estate does.
Winemaker Thierry Haberer brings a global perspective to the cellar. A graduate of the University of Bordeaux in 2004, Thierry has made wine across four continents -- at the acclaimed Anthonij Rupert Winery in South Africa, in the United States, and in Bulgaria -- before settling in Franschhoek. Working with the renowned French wine advisor Michel Rolland in the estate's early years, Thierry established a style that is full-bodied, clearly structured, and intense, with fine nuances that reveal themselves over time. The estate cultivates only its top 16 hectares under vine, focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Merlot alongside Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Semillon.
The wine range is built around four tiers. The everyday Vernissage and Rothko Rose provide accessible entry points, while the varietal wines -- Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Chenin Blanc -- showcase the Franschhoek terroir at a mid-range price point. The Reserve tier includes Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Semillon, all aged in French oak for added complexity. At the pinnacle stands the Big G -- the estate's flagship red blend, which earned a gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2011 -- the Visionaire Bordeaux-style blend, and Elysium, a prestige cuvee priced at R2750.
Beyond the cellar, Holden Manz has built a complete luxury experience. The 5-star Country House offers four elegant rooms in Cape Dutch architectural style with views across vineyards, mountains, and gardens. The on-site spa provides treatments amid the tranquillity of the valley. The Franschhoek Kitchen restaurant, open daily for lunch, serves Italian-inspired cuisine crafted from home-grown fruit and vegetables, designed to complement the estate wines. A balcony overlooking the vineyard with mountain views provides one of the most memorable dining settings in Franschhoek.
The Tasting Room is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, with a standard guided tasting and a premium Barrel Tasting experience at R1250 per couple. The Barrel Tasting includes six current releases with three barrel samples, a Harvest Platter, and 90 minutes of guided exploration presented by a winemaker or owner. The estate is also a stop on the popular Franschhoek Wine Tram route, bringing a steady stream of visitors through its picturesque grounds. Private tutored tastings, wine workshops, and vineyard tours are available by appointment, while the estate's function spaces host weddings and events against the backdrop of the Franschhoek mountains.
Sophisticated rooms with breakfast & afternoon tea, along with a spa & an outdoor pool.
