The Germanier name in South African wine begins with Jacques Germanier, the renowned Swiss winemaker who established Germanier Wines on the Sonop Wine Farm along Voorpaardeberg Road in Windmeul, Paarl -- on the outskirts of Cape Town in the historic, sun-drenched winelands. In 2014, his daughter Sophie Germanier moved from Switzerland to South Africa to take the reins of the family business, bringing Swiss precision and a deep commitment to organic farming to the Cape.

In 2020, Sophie debuted her own label: Organic Wine by Sophie Germanier. The range was born from a simple conviction -- that wine should be made with minimal intervention, from grapes grown without pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilisers. The grapes are sourced from a variety of organic vineyards across the Western Cape, from coastal sites cooled by Atlantic sea breezes to dry-farmed soils in the Swartland, with the home base remaining in Paarl.

The initial release comprised three wines: a Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, a Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Shiraz, and a Grenache Noir Rose. The range has since expanded to include a Chardonnay, a Pinotage, and a Rhone-inspired Shiraz Mourvedre Viognier blend that earned a prestigious IWSC Silver Award with a 90-point rating. Every wine in the portfolio is certified organic in Europe, the Americas, and China, and all are certified vegan.

Sophie's approach to sustainability extends well beyond the vineyard. She holds the WIETA seal for fair labour practices and has partnered with Honeybee Heroes to support pollinator biodiversity on the farm. The packaging uses lightweight bottles and recycled materials wherever possible. It is a holistic vision of winemaking where environmental responsibility and social ethics are not afterthoughts but founding principles.

The estate is located on Sonop Wine Farm in Windmeul, Paarl, operating Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. While the operation is primarily production and export-focused rather than a traditional visitor estate, wines are available for purchase online through the official website organicbysg.com, as well as through South African retailers including Mothercity Liquor, Wine Cellar, Bar Keeper, Wild Organics, Wine Concepts, and Faithfull to Nature.
