Freedom Hill Wine — Cabernet Sauvignon and more in Western Cape
Established in 2004
Freedom Hill Vineyards occupies a deeply symbolic location in the South African winelands. Nestled between Franschhoek and Paarl on the slopes of Wemmershoek Mountain, the estate overlooks the former Victor Verster Prison — now Drakenstein Correctional Centre — where Nelson Mandela spent his final three years of incarceration before walking to freedom on 11 February 1990. It is from this historic vantage point that the farm takes its evocative name.
The land has its own long history. It originally formed part of the farm La Paris, granted to French Huguenot Francois Retief in 1699. The modern story begins in 1997 when Francois Klomp, an engineer by profession, purchased the 82-hectare property. Vineyards were planted in 1998, and after years of development the cellar doors opened officially in November 2004 as Freedom Hill Boutique Weddings and Winery.
The estate is deliberately small-scale: only hand-selected red grapes from the farm's own vineyards go into the wines, and production is limited to approximately 6,000 cases per year. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinotage thrive in the sandy soils on the mountain slopes, and all wines are matured for at least 12 months in oak barrels. Winemaker Helena Neethling oversees the cellar, crafting wines that prioritise fruit purity and structure over volume.
Freedom Hill has also established itself as one of the Paarl region's most intimate wedding venues. The classic Cape vineyard setting can accommodate up to 70 seated guests with an indoor dance floor, 90 with an outdoor covered veranda, or 120 for cocktail-style events. The ceremony and reception take place on the same property, framed by vineyards and mountain views.
Visitors to the tasting room are welcomed by Estelle Domanse, who has been with the farm since 2006 and provides personal, unhurried tastings. The estate also produces a Freedom Walk Cape Blend, a distinctly South African red that combines Pinotage with Bordeaux varieties — a nod to both the land's heritage and its name.
The sandy soils of the Wemmershoek slopes provide excellent drainage for the red varieties, while the proximity to both the Franschhoek and Paarl valleys creates a microclimate that benefits from afternoon cooling breezes. The estate remains a family affair: Francois and Alida Klomp continue to oversee the property, maintaining the boutique scale and personal attention that define the Freedom Hill experience. For visitors seeking a wine estate with genuine historical resonance and intimate charm, far from the crowds of the more commercial routes, Freedom Hill delivers on both counts.
Helena Neethling is the winemaker at Freedom Hill, responsible for crafting the estate's boutique range of red wines. She works exclusively with hand-selected grapes from the farm's own vineyards, maturing all wines for at least 12 months in oak barrels.
