Established in 1981
The story of Eikendal begins not in the Cape Winelands but on the island of Sumatra, where the Swiss Saager family ventured in 1909 to build an agricultural empire in the Dutch East Indies. After decades farming coffee and other crops across Southeast Asia, political upheaval redirected the family's interests to southern Africa, and in 1980 they turned their attention to the wine industry of the Western Cape.
In 1981 the Saagers acquired two neighbouring farms — Longridge and Mietjiesvlei — in the Helderberg area of Stellenbosch and merged them into Eikendal Vineyards, establishing a 76-hectare wine estate in what is known as the Golden Triangle of South African wine growing. The mountain and maritime microclimate of this corridor, sitting between the Helderberg Mountains and the cooling influence of False Bay, creates ideal conditions for producing wines of structure and finesse.
For over four decades, Swiss precision has informed every aspect of Eikendal's operation. The Saager family from Zurich maintained ownership through multiple generations, investing in modern cellar facilities and maintaining the estate's distinctive European sensibility. Winemaker Nico Grobler has been producing award-winning wines at Eikendal for more than nine years, bringing an innovative yet old-world approach that focuses on terroir to produce the most expressive fruit possible. He works primarily with single-varietal wines, allowing each cultivar to speak for itself.
The wine portfolio centres on classic Stellenbosch reds — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, and Cabernet Franc — alongside Rhone varieties including Grenache, Mourvedre, and Cinsault. The whites are led by a barrel-fermented Chardonnay and the estate's Janina Unwooded Chardonnay, a crisp, fruit-forward expression that has become a cellar-door favourite. The Charisma Red Blend and the Classique Red represent the estate's flagship blended offerings, with the Classique commanding the top of the range. A traditional-method MCC and a Pinot Noir Rose complete the portfolio.
Eikendal's Italian restaurant serves al fresco lunches under the oaks, with a menu that complements the wine range, running from Tuesday to Sunday. The estate also offers vineyard walks and fishing in the farm dam, activities that reflect the relaxed, European-inflected atmosphere that sets Eikendal apart from its neighbours. Cottage-style lodge accommodation makes it possible to stay overnight on the property, waking to views across the vineyards toward the Helderberg.
Google's editorial summary captures it well: wine estate with tastings, restaurant with al fresco dining, vineyard walks and fishing, plus lodge. With 658 reviews averaging 4.4 stars and a tasting fee of just R44, Eikendal offers one of the most accessible and rewarding wine experiences on the R44 corridor between Stellenbosch and Somerset West.
