Established in 2002
In 2002, two wine lovers with no farming background -- Sharon Parnell and her business partner Peter Clarke -- bought a sheep farm in the foothills of the Babylonstoren mountain range on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge and began transforming it into something entirely new. Where sheep had grazed, they planted 28 hectares of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and smaller varietal parcels including Sangiovese. The vineyards sit at 320 metres elevation, exposed to the cold Atlantic winds that define this corner of Walker Bay.
What sets Domaine des Dieux apart is a distinction no other estate in the valley can claim: Sharon Parnell was the first to produce Methode Cap Classique sparkling wine in the Hemel-en-Aarde. She recognised that the region's proven excellence with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir -- the classic Champagne grapes -- made it a natural home for world-class bubbly. The gamble paid off spectacularly. The Claudia Brut MCC, named after Sharon's granddaughter, has won Best Producer at the Amorim Cap Classique Challenge with the highest score among all 127 wines entered. The Rose of Sharon Brut Rose MCC -- an 80/20 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay -- is equally celebrated. Domaine des Dieux has been crowned South Africa's best Cap Classique exponent multiple times, and the estate also took the best wine in South Africa honour at the 2019 Veritas Wine Awards.
The winemaking model is distinctive. Rather than employing a single resident winemaker, each wine is overseen by a specialist in a local cellar: Kevin Grant of neighbouring Ataraxia handles the Chardonnay, while Niels Verburg of Luddite crafts the Syrah/Mourvedre blend. This collaborative approach draws on the deep talent pool of the Hemel-en-Aarde and ensures each wine receives expert attention.
The estate is now run day-to-day by Sharon's daughter Megan Mullis, with viticulture overseen by her husband Shane Mullis -- making Domaine des Dieux a genuine multi-generational family affair. The tasting room is open seasonally: Monday to Saturday 11:00-17:00 and Sunday 11:00-16:00 in summer (September-April), daily 11:00-16:00 in winter (May-August). Groups larger than 15 should book ahead. Tastings cost R50 for a selection of six wines -- one of the most generous tasting experiences in the valley. The intimate, boutique atmosphere and the family's warm hospitality make this one of the Hemel-en-Aarde's best-kept secrets. Beyond the flagship bubblies, the still wine range has earned its own following: the Josephine Pinot Noir and estate Chardonnay benefit from bottle-ageing and show the Ridge's cool-climate finesse, while the Sangiovese -- an unusual variety for the region -- and the Petit Rose add personality and breadth to the portfolio.
