Klein Roosboom — A family's story, told one bottle at a time
Tucked into the foothills of the Durbanville Wine Valley, barely 20 kilometres from central Cape Town, Klein Roosboom is the kind of place that rewards those who seek it out. The estate bills itself as Cape Town's best-kept secret, and there is something genuinely hidden about it -- a boutique family winery on a 300-year-old property, producing small-batch wines named after the people who make the place run.
The winery is the labour of love of Karin de Villiers, who serves as both owner and winemaker. It is a true family affair: her husband Jean manages the vineyards as viticulturist, and their children -- sons Nicol and Johan, and daughter Marne -- each play a role in the operation. The personal nature of the enterprise is reflected in the wines themselves. The Janet Shiraz is named for Karin's mother-in-law. The Marianna Roos Rose honours her own mother. The Jean Sauvignon Blanc carries her husband's name. The Nicol Merlot and Johan Cabernet Sauvignon complete the family portrait in bottle form. Even the Marne Brut Cap Classique -- a standout in the range -- is named for their daughter.
Karin's winemaking philosophy centres on minimal intervention. The goal is to let the Durbanville terroir and the specific character of each vintage speak for itself, without heavy-handed manipulation in the cellar. This approach has yielded consistently award-winning results: the estate has earned recognition at Veritas, Michelangelo, and other major South African wine competitions. The Durbanville appellation, with its cooling maritime breezes from Table Bay and its decomposed granite soils, is particularly well suited to Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon, and Klein Roosboom makes the most of these natural advantages.
Beyond the standard range, the estate produces a Limited Range of single-vineyard wines -- a Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon -- as well as the My Way collection, which represents the pinnacle of the winery's output. The My Way Barrel Blend, priced at R630, is the flagship red, while the My Way Brut and My Way Sauvignon Blanc offer top-tier white and sparkling alternatives. The Dear Diary Chardonnay and Deville Sauvignon Blanc round out a thoughtfully constructed portfolio that covers every major style without ever feeling stretched.
The estate experience goes well beyond tasting. Wine tastings take place in repurposed concrete wine tanks -- an atmospheric and unconventional setting. Jean's Restaurant, named for the viticulturist himself, offers a seasonal a la carte menu of uncomplicated, honest dishes positioned among the vineyards. Visitors can settle on the lush lawns with mats and cushions for a vineyard picnic paired with estate wines. Cellar tours are available on request.
With a 4.6-star rating from over 1,500 Google reviews, Klein Roosboom has built a devoted following. It is closed on Mondays and operates from 10:00 to 16:30 Tuesday through Sunday, with extended hours to 18:30 on Fridays. The intimate scale, family warmth, and personal touch make it a distinctive counterpoint to the larger, more corporate estates in the region -- a place where the winemaker knows every vine and every bottle carries a family name.
Karin de Villiers is the owner-winemaker at Klein Roosboom, a hands-on viticulturist and cellar master who produces every wine on the estate. Her husband Jean de Villiers serves as viticulturist, bringing an uncompromising passion for vineyard management. Karin's minimal-intervention philosophy ensures each wine reflects the Durbanville terroir, and her portfolio has earned gold awards at Veritas and Michelangelo.
