Established in 1990
Douglas Green Bellingham -- universally known as DGB -- is one of South Africa's largest independent wine and spirits producers, with a portfolio of brands whose histories stretch back over three centuries. The company in its present form was established in 1990, but its roots are entwined with two of the Cape's most storied wine farms: Boschendal, founded in 1685 as one of the first estates in the Franschhoek Valley, and Bellingham, established in 1693 by Bernard and Fredagh Podlashuk who transformed a neglected Franschhoek property into a pioneering winery.
The Douglas Green side of the business traces to the 1940s, when Douglas Green began the wholesale wine trade. The merger of these operations created DGB, a company that today operates from its production hub at 14 Marconi Crescent in Montague Gardens, Cape Town, while drawing fruit and wine from properties and partners across the Western Cape.
DGB's brand portfolio is remarkably broad. At the premium end sit Boschendal, Bellingham, and Franschhoek Cellar -- estates and brands with deep Franschhoek heritage and wines that consistently earn international recognition. Bellingham's Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc won Best of Show South Africa White at Mundus Vini 2024. Fryer's Cove, sourced from the remote Bamboes Bay vineyards on the West Coast, adds a cool-climate dimension to the portfolio. Old Road Wine Co. represents a newer, craft-oriented approach.
The accessible end of the portfolio includes Douglas Green (one of the oldest wine brands in South Africa), Tall Horse, The Beachhouse, and Vineyard Friends -- brands designed for everyday drinking and international export markets. More recently, DGB has added the Unorthodox range of Kosher wines and the Tread Lightly environmentally conscious label, reflecting an awareness of shifting consumer values.
DGB's production capabilities are substantial. The company operates bottling and packaging facilities in both Wellington and Cape Town, with the capacity to produce, market, and distribute across domestic and international channels. The Montague Gardens site functions as the corporate headquarters, housing administrative operations alongside production infrastructure.
The company's competitive record is formidable. DGB was celebrated as South Africa's best wine producer at the 2026 Mundus Vini competition, marking the fifth consecutive year (2022 to 2026) that the company has earned this distinction. Across the 2026 competition alone, DGB collected one Grand Gold, twenty-seven Gold, and nineteen Silver medals.
While DGB's Montague Gardens headquarters is a corporate and production facility rather than a visitor-facing wine estate, the company's individual brand properties -- particularly Boschendal and Bellingham in Franschhoek -- offer world-class tasting, dining, and accommodation experiences. DGB itself represents the engine room behind some of the most recognisable wine brands in South Africa.
DGB's winemaking is led by specialist teams across its individual brands and estates. Each property -- Boschendal, Bellingham, Franschhoek Cellar, Fryer's Cove, and Old Road Wine Co. -- operates with its own winemaker and vineyard management, unified by DGB's central quality and production oversight.
