Art, wine, and fine dining on the Helshoogte Pass
Perched on the crest of the Helshoogte Pass, where the Simonsberg and Helderberg mountains converge in a sweep of vine-covered slopes, Delaire Graff Estate commands one of the most coveted positions in the South African winelands. The estate takes its name from the Afrikaans phrase meaning "from the air" -- a fitting description for a property where panoramic views stretch across the Stellenbosch valley in every direction, and where the ambition has always been to elevate every element of the wine farm experience to its highest possible expression.
The transformation of Delaire into the estate it is today began when the internationally renowned diamantaire Laurence Graff acquired the property. Under his custodianship, the farm was reimagined as a destination where world-class wine, contemporary art, haute cuisine, and luxury hospitality would exist in considered harmony. No detail was left to chance. The architecture, designed to frame the landscape rather than compete with it, houses one of the most significant private art collections in the Southern Hemisphere. Sculptures by leading international and South African artists punctuate the gardens, while museum-quality paintings and installations occupy dedicated gallery spaces throughout the property.
In the cellar, winemaker Kallie Fernhout oversees a portfolio that reflects the estate's commitment to precision and excellence. Delaire Graff has built a particular reputation as a Bordeaux Blend and Cape Blend specialist, with its Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay consistently earning critical acclaim. The range extends across Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Rose, Cap Classique, and dessert wines -- each crafted from estate vineyards that benefit from the Helshoogte Pass's unique combination of altitude, aspect, and cooling maritime breezes. The estate's status as a Premium and Fine Wine specialist is reflected in tasting experiences that range from R1,050 to R1,650, conducted in a cellar tasting room with terrace views that make the price feel almost incidental.
Dining at Delaire Graff is an event in itself. The estate operates two restaurants, offering fine dining that spans food-and-wine pairings, seasonal tasting menus, sushi, artisan platters, and an emphasis on ingredient-driven cuisine. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all served, with vegetarian and vegan options available throughout. The restaurants open onto terraces overlooking the vineyards, and the calibre of the kitchen has earned the estate recognition as an award-winning food destination.
Accommodation takes the form of luxury lodges -- private villas with plunge pools and full kitchens, set among the vineyards and gardens. The estate is a member of Relais & Chateaux, placing it among an exclusive international collection of independently owned hotels and restaurants distinguished by their character and quality. Whether guests come for an overnight retreat or a long weekend, the property is designed to feel like a private estate rather than a hotel.
Beyond the cellar and the table, Delaire Graff offers guided cellar tours, vineyard walks, private tutored tastings, and dedicated art tours that move through the sculpture gardens and gallery spaces. A full-service spa provides an additional layer of indulgence, while the estate's formal and informal gardens, walking trails, and function spaces make it suitable for everything from romantic escapes to corporate events. It is a rare property where luxury is not performed but woven into the fabric of the place itself.

Cellar Master Kallie Fernhout oversees 17 hectares of hand-tended Bordeaux varietals planted on the estate's maritime-mountainous terroir. Under his stewardship, the Botmaskop blend has earned 94 points from Tim Atkin, and the estate has been recognised among the top 40 vineyards in the world.
