Webersburg Wine Estate — Crafting wines since 1693
Established in 1693
On the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains, where Annandale Road winds through some of Stellenbosch's most prized vineyard land, Webersburg Wine Estate has been making wine since before the Cape Colony had a century to its name. The farm was originally granted as Groenerivier in 1693, and the Cape Dutch homestead that stands today was built in 1786 -- making it one of the oldest continuously occupied manor houses in the winelands.
The estate's modern identity centres on Cabernet Sauvignon, grown in the deep, well-drained soils of the Helderberg's south-facing slopes where afternoon sea breezes from False Bay temper the summer heat. Winemaker and viticulturist Matthew Van Heerden has steered the cellar to numerous international and local accolades, producing a focused range that prioritises quality over volume. The flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is available across multiple vintages, some stretching back to the late 1990s in large-format bottles -- a testament to the wine's cellaring potential. The Bastiaan Blend, a red Bordeaux-style cuvee, and the limited-release Shobi round out the reds, while a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, an elegant Rose, and two Methode Cap Classique sparkling wines complete the portfolio.
Webersburg is as much a hospitality destination as it is a winery. The manor house has been converted into a five-room luxury guesthouse, furnished with antiques and original wooden floors, accommodating up to ten guests in exclusive-use arrangements. The Jonkershuis offers additional units with en-suite bathrooms and kitchenettes, while the self-catering Vineyard Cottages and Oak Cottage provide family-friendly options with dam and mountain views.
Dining at Webersburg revolves around the estate restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch, and Neapolitan-style pizza. The terrace overlooks the dam and vineyards, and the kitchen sources ingredients to complement the wine list. Monday is pizza-only; Tuesday through Sunday brings a fuller menu.
Beyond food and wine, the estate offers vineyard and cellar tours, picnics on the lawns, a cooking experience, harvest participation, jeep tours through the vineyards, tennis, and dedicated children's activities. As a heritage estate with SATSA accreditation and WWF recognition for its architecturally unique character and award-winning wines, Webersburg also serves as a sought-after wedding and corporate events venue.
Three centuries of winemaking have given this estate a depth that newer properties cannot replicate. The 1786 cellar, the mature Cabernet vines, the dam reflecting the Helderberg peaks -- it all converges into an experience that feels both timeless and alive.
