Botha Wine Cellar / Kelder — Shiraz and more in Worcester
Established in 1949
On 8 February 1949, fourteen farmers in the Breedekloof valley near Worcester registered a new cooperative cellar called Botha Kelder. One year later, before the building was even finished, they brought in their first harvest -- 3,386 tons of grapes processed in a half-built cellar by a community determined to make wine on their own terms. An official opening celebration finally took place in 1952, after three years of intense harvesting had proved the venture was here to stay.
The cooperative's name and origin are rooted in the Botha family's farming legacy in the Breedekloof, a warm inland valley flanked by the Waaihoek Mountains and fed by the Breede River. The region's combination of fertile alluvial soils, generous sunshine, and mountain-cooled evenings produces grapes with both concentration and freshness -- ideal for the bold reds and aromatic whites that have become Botha Kelder's signature.
From those 14 founding members, Botha Cellar has grown to encompass 35 farms with an annual capacity of 34,000 tons, producing approximately 25 million litres of wine. In 2010, Botha Kelder and neighbouring Slanghoek Kelders joined forces to establish Arbelos Wines, a partnership that sources 70,000 tons of grapes from 70 wine growers, creating one of the largest grape procurement operations in the Breedekloof.
Despite the industrial scale behind the scenes, Botha Kelder's visitor-facing operation retains the character of a working co-op cellar. The tasting room sits on the R43 between Worcester and Wolseley, about 75 minutes from Cape Town, offering an accessible stop on the Breedekloof wine route. Tastings range from R45 for a standard flight to R295 for the full premium experience, and the cellar's on-site dining adds a casual food element.
The wine portfolio spans approachable everyday reds and whites under the Botha Kelder label through to serious reserve wines and rich, full-bodied fortified dessert wines. Shiraz and Pinotage lead the red selection, reflecting the Breedekloof's strength with warm-climate varieties, while Chenin Blanc anchors the whites. The fortified wines -- a nod to the valley's long tradition of sweet and port-style production -- remain a speciality.
Botha Kelder is not a glamorous estate with manicured gardens and a celebrity chef. It is a working cooperative cellar that has been making honest, well-crafted wine in the Breedekloof valley for over 75 years -- and the farmers who founded it in 1949 would recognise the spirit of the place today.
