Established in 1941
Boland Cellar traces its origins to 1939, when about forty wine farmers in the Boland region -- the fertile inland area north-east of Cape Town -- began pooling their grapes at a shared pressing facility. When the joint production outgrew the space and the group disbanded, nine determined farmers from the Paarl area refused to give up. On 17 June 1941, they took the bold step of forming their own cooperative winery on the Noord Agter-Paarl Road, establishing what would become one of South Africa's most recognised wine brands.
From those humble beginnings, Boland Cellar grew over more than eighty years into an international producer competing on a global scale. The cooperative model proved to be its greatest asset: partner vineyards today cover approximately 1,900 hectares across the Cape Coastal Region, from Paarl and the Paardeberg through Malmesbury and Durbanville to the Berg River Valley. This geographic spread provides the winemaking team with grapes from five distinct climatic zones, each contributing regional character -- the Paardeberg for Chenin Blanc and Shiraz, the Drakenstein slopes for high-quality reds, the Swartland border for robust Pinotage, the coastal areas for Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Berg River Valley for white varietals.
The concept of 'one region, five climates, masterful blending' underpins the entire wine programme. Winemaker Rosco Lewis leads the red wine production, working with a dynamic team of oenologists. The wine ranges reflect the breadth of the operation: the Classic Selection offers accessible single-varietal wines; the Five Climates range showcases the cooperative's blending philosophy; the Melita brand supports reforestation in South Africa; the multi-award-winning One Formation range represents the top tier of blended wines; and the Reserve range is the most premium expression.
The cellar has earned recognition far beyond Paarl. It has been named one of the top 100 wine producers in the world by the World Association of Wine and Spirits Writers and Journalists, and nominated as one of South Africa's top 20 export companies in its category. The tasting room on the Noord Agter-Paarl Road features an underground-style design where visitors can sample around thirty wines. Tastings range from R85 to R197, and the estate also operates a cellar theatre venue for evening entertainment. The cellar is wheelchair accessible and open Monday to Friday 09:00 to 17:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 15:00.
