Established in 1709
Lourensford Wine Estate traces its origins to 1709, when Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel carved the property from the neighbouring Vergelegen estate in the Helderberg basin of Somerset West. For nearly three centuries the land served as one of the Cape's great fruit farms, its slopes climbing the Helderberg Mountains amid indigenous fynbos and proteas, cooled by breezes rolling in off the Atlantic Ocean.
The modern wine chapter began in 1998 when Dr Christo Wiese purchased the property with a vision to restore it as a world-class wine estate. The first vines were planted in 2000, and construction of what would become one of the most technologically advanced cellars in the Southern Hemisphere began in 2002. Using a gravity-flow system to handle the fruit with minimal intervention, the cellar was completed in record time, and the first wines were vinified in 2003.
Today the estate spans a remarkable four thousand hectares of forest, fynbos, fruit orchards and vineyards. Cellarmaster Chris Joubert oversees the red wines while Hannes Nel crafts the whites, and together they produce a portfolio built on strict vineyard selection, berry sorting and delicate winemaking. The result is classic, elegant wines that consistently earn awards. The Limited Release Chardonnay is widely regarded as the flagship, though the Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Shiraz, Merlot and Mourvedre all carry the estate's signature of precision and restraint. The range is structured into three tiers: River Garden, Lourensford and the limited Winemaker's Selection.
Beyond the cellar, Lourensford has grown into a destination in its own right. The estate is home to multiple dining options, an art gallery, a market and event spaces that draw visitors well beyond the wine-curious. Cellar tours showcase the gravity-flow winery and its sophisticated barrel maturation programme, while the tasting room offers sweeping views across the valley to the ocean. The Belgian chocolate and wine pairing — matching estate wines with premium handmade chocolates — has become a signature experience that draws visitors from across the Western Cape. Dogs are welcome on the grounds, the estate is fully wheelchair accessible, and families with children are well catered for with ample outdoor space to explore.
With ocean views from the vineyards, mountain slopes covered in proteas, and a cellar that marries cutting-edge technology with a three-hundred-year heritage, Lourensford occupies a unique position in the Helderberg — a thoroughly modern estate built on ancient and distinguished foundations.
