Established in 1910
On the lower slopes of the Simonsberg mountain, where the R44 runs between Stellenbosch and Klapmuts, a cannon once stood on a hilltop to signal the arrival of ships in Table Bay. The farm took its name from that cannon — Kanonkop, 'cannon hill' — and has spent the past century proving that the soils beneath it produce some of the finest red wines in the Southern Hemisphere.
Kanonkop was originally part of the larger Uitkyk farm before passing into the hands of the Sauer family in the early twentieth century. Paul Sauer, who inherited the property, had graduated from Elsenburg Agricultural College in 1919 under the tutorship of Abraham Izak Perold — the legendary viticulturist who created Pinotage by crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsault in 1925. Sauer's lifelong friendship with Perold, who assisted him with Kanonkop's viticulture, is widely credited as the reason Pinotage found its deepest roots on the estate. The Sauer family began cultivating high-quality grape varieties in the 1930s, and by the 1940s the first Pinotage vines were in the ground. The oldest surviving vineyard, the 1953 'Black Label' Pinotage block, is now over seventy years old and produces one of the most sought-after wines in the country.
Bottling under the Kanonkop label began in 1973, and the estate has had only three winemakers in its entire bottled history. Jan Boland Coetzee (1968-1981) laid the foundations. Beyers Truter (1981-2003) built the international reputation, becoming synonymous with South African Pinotage. Then came Abrie Beeslaar, who joined in 2002 and has since become one of the most decorated winemakers on the planet. Beeslaar was named International Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 2008, 2015, and 2017 — a treble that no other South African winemaker has matched.
The wine portfolio at Kanonkop is deliberately focused. The estate produces only red wines and a single rose, all from estate-grown fruit. The Kadette range — Cape Blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, and Pinotage Rose — offers accessible entry points. The estate-level Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon have earned Platter's 5-star ratings and scores above 94 points from Tim Atkin MW. But the crown jewel is the Kanonkop Paul Sauer, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc named for the patriarch who planted the original vines. It has scored 98 points from Tim Atkin and is widely regarded as one of the greatest wines produced in Africa. And the Black Label Pinotage, made from the 1953 block, is produced only in exceptional vintages — a wine of profound depth and historical significance.
Kanonkop does not chase trends. There is no accommodation, no elaborate restaurant complex — just a tasting room, platters, picnic baskets, and some of the most serious red wines on the continent. The estate's ethos is traditional: family-owned, heritage-focused, and utterly committed to the proposition that Stellenbosch terroir, in the right hands, can produce wines that stand alongside the best in the world.
Abrie Beeslaar has been Kanonkop's winemaker since 2002 — only the third in the estate's bottled history. He was awarded International Winemaker of the Year at the IWSC in London in 2008, 2015, and 2017, a treble unmatched by any South African winemaker. Beeslaar's Paul Sauer Bordeaux blend has scored 98 points from Tim Atkin MW, and his Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon regularly earn Platter's 5-star ratings.
