Established in 1898
In 1898, Piet Joubert acquired a parcel of farmland on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain near Paarl, naming it Klein Simonsvlei. His primary aim was fruit cultivation, but grapes soon proved the land's true calling. At the age of twenty-two, his second son Daniel joined him on the farm, and over half a century Daniel's dedication grew annual production from 50 tons to 800 tons, all pressed in the estate's own cellar.
Daniel's son Niel succeeded him in 1950, becoming the third-generation patriarch who would lend his name to the brand. But it was the fourth generation, under Daan Joubert, who transformed the operation. When Daan assumed sole responsibility in 1981, he recognised that the family's future lay not just in growing grapes but in bottling their own wines. That dream became reality in 1994, when South Africa's wine industry opened to export markets and the first bottles bearing the Niel Joubert label were released.
Today, Niel Joubert Wines is a fifth-generation family estate, one of the longest continuously family-owned wine farms in the Paarl region. The property is enriched by a natural mountain spring that feeds the vineyards and a dam, and the Simonsberg's slopes provide diverse aspects and altitudes for an unusually broad range of varietals. The estate produces fifteen wines across Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Pinotage, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Grenache, Cinsault, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Gruner Veltliner, Rose, and Cap Classique.
The wine portfolio is arranged in distinct tiers. The Estate range offers approachable, well-made wines for everyday enjoyment. The Patrysbult range -- named after the rocky outcrop on the farm -- represents the reserve tier, with wines from the estate's best vineyard blocks given extended maturation. The Reserve wines sit at the top, produced only in exceptional vintages from the finest parcels. A Cap Classique completes the range, reflecting the estate's versatility.
Niel Joubert holds multiple specialist accreditations from Wine of the Month Club, including recognition as a Cap Classique Specialist, Cabernet Sauvignon Specialist, Chardonnay Specialist, Chenin Blanc Specialist, Sauvignon Blanc Specialist, and Shiraz Specialist. The estate is family-owned and managed, with award-winning wines recognised by the industry.
The farm is set among mountain views, farmland scenery, and a large dam, with walking trails through the property. Visitors can taste wines Monday to Thursday from 08h30 to 17h00 and Fridays until 15h00. A wine club membership and online shop extend the estate's reach beyond the tasting room.
The estate's winemaker, known as Erni, uses a hands-on approach in the cellar to create wines that realise their full potential. Working with fruit from the estate's diverse Simonsberg slopes, the winemaking team oversees fifteen varietals from a single property -- an unusually broad range that reflects the farm's exceptional terroir diversity.
