Uva Mira Mountain Vineyards — Romance and wine in Stellenbosch
Established in 1993
High on the slopes of the Helderberg, where the mountain meets the sky and the view stretches clear across False Bay to Table Mountain, Uva Mira Mountain Vineyards occupies one of the most dramatic positions in the Cape Winelands. The estate sits between 260 and 620 metres above sea level -- altitude that makes all the difference, slowing ripening by a full two weeks compared with the valley floor below and preserving the natural acidity that gives Uva Mira wines their distinctive freshness and longevity.
The story begins in 1993, when Desmond and Denise Weedon purchased 127 hectares of the original Groene River Farm from Webersburg. Their grandson Derrick, then studying Latin at university, christened the property Uva Mira -- Latin for 'miracle grape.' Vines went into the ground in 1995, and the first commercially available wines appeared in 2004. Just two years later, the Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2004 won the International Wine & Spirits Competition Trophy for the World's Best Chardonnay -- an astonishing result for such a young estate.
In 2014 Toby Venter, CEO of Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini in South Africa and owner of Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, acquired Uva Mira. Venter brought an automotive magnate's attention to detail and a commitment to the pursuit of excellence. Under his stewardship, ten hectares of new vineyards were planted on virgin high-altitude soils, and oenologist Christiaan Coetzee was given the resources to push quality further. The estate was hailed by The Drinks Business Global Chardonnay Masters as 'One of the World's Great Chardonnay Makers' in 2017, the same year it became the first South African winery to win a Six Nations Wine Challenge trophy for Best Bordeaux Blend.
Today the portfolio is structured in two collections. The Mira Collection offers approachable expressions of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The Icon Collection showcases single-vineyard and limited-release wines that have earned Decanter Platinum awards, Drinks Business Master medals, and a James Suckling accolade naming the Single Tree Chardonnay 2018 as the standout 'Top Chardonnay' of the tasting.
The tasting room, open Monday to Sunday, frames the estate's panoramic views of False Bay, Table Bay and Table Mountain. Three tasting tiers are available: The Mira Collection (R350), The Cabernet Franc Experience (R550) with optional cheese board, and The Icon Tasting (R750). A Wine Club offers bi-annual or quarterly curated cases of twelve bottles with member-only pricing and complimentary delivery.
Beyond the glass, Uva Mira invests in precision irrigation research, soil microbiome studies, and a conservation initiative that has rehabilitated over a hundred English oaks threatened by the Polyphagous Shot Hole Beetle. Owl boxes, bat perches, raptor perches and beehives line the vineyards -- a working ecosystem where baboons, duiker, owls and caracal share the mountain with some of the finest Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc in the Southern Hemisphere.
Christiaan Coetzee has led winemaking at Uva Mira since 2013 and celebrated his 12th vintage in 2024. Working with high-altitude Helderberg fruit between 260 and 620 metres, he crafts wines of elegance, minerality and longevity using gravity-fed cellar techniques, meticulous hand-sorting, and barrel selection from specific French coopers.
