South Hill Vineyards — Cabernet Sauvignon and more in Elgin
Established in 2001
South Hill Vineyards traces its origins to two subdivisions of farmland in the Elgin Valley known as Jan Niemandsbosch and De Hoop, which together once formed South Hall Farm. In May 2001, a consortium of four South African businessmen purchased the property and began the long work of transforming a neglected apple and pear farm into a premium wine estate. By mid-2006, two of the partners had bought out the others, and the renewed focus on quality wine and hospitality took root.
The transformation was dramatic. Twelve hectares of Sauvignon Blanc were planted in 2003 and 2004, quickly proving that the cool Elgin climate could produce exceptional white wines. Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Rose followed, building a compact but well-considered portfolio that takes full advantage of the cool mountain plateau formed by the Hottentots Holland, Kogelberg, and Groenlandberg ranges. The town of Grabouw sits at the heart of this natural amphitheatre, surrounded by mountains that funnel cool ocean air from False Bay across the vineyards.
Winemaker Sean Skibbe, who has guided the cellar through its formative years, speaks of Elgin as one of the coolest, if not the coolest, wine-growing region in South Africa. That climatic advantage is evident in South Hill's wines: a Sauvignon Blanc with tropical fruit and fresh elegance, a cerebral Pinot Noir with red cherry and earthy undertones, a structured Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Syrah and Rose that showcase the versatility of cool-climate red varieties.
Beyond wine, South Hill has built a reputation as one of Elgin's finest dining and hospitality destinations. The restaurant strives to be the quintessential neighbourhood bistro, a place to kick back over a leisurely breakfast or generous country-style lunch. Wherever possible, ingredients come from the estate's own kitchen herb and vegetable garden or from local suppliers, and the menu features country platters, tapas, homemade breads, and relishes. The gift shop adds another reason to linger.
Accommodation elevates South Hill from day visit to destination. Six spacious rooms in the Guest House offer luxurious farm-stay comfort, while the Boat House and Pumphouse Honeymoon Cottage provide more intimate options. The property is wheelchair accessible, and the peaceful setting beside vineyards and orchards has made it a sought-after wedding venue.
South Hill is a place where the bones of a once-neglected farm have been rebuilt with care, where cool-climate wines and warm country hospitality come together in one of the Western Cape's most beautiful valleys.
Sean Skibbe has guided South Hill's cellar through its formative years, crafting wines that exploit the extreme cool-climate conditions of the Elgin Valley. His approach emphasises the natural elegance and freshness that come from what he describes as one of the coolest wine-growing regions in South Africa.
