Siwela Wines & Boat Cruises — Views and vines in Western Cape
Siwela Wines is the creation of Siwela Sweetness Masoga, a biotechnologist turned winemaker who founded the company as a proudly South African, female black-owned wine brand. The name Siwela is her first name, an indigenous IsiZulu word meaning 'crossing over,' and that spirit of crossing boundaries defines everything about the business.
Masoga's scientific background informs her winemaking. The grapes are hand-harvested from vineyards in the Stellenbosch wine region and follow what she describes as a scientific and delicate technique to produce wines of consistent quality. The result is a range of eight varietals, from a fragrant Gewurztraminer and a crisp Chenin Blanc to a bold Red Blend and a Sweet Red. The sparkling wines are a particular strength, with the Cap Classique range drawing serious attention. The Pinotage Rose MCC won gold at the Gilbert and Gaillard International Awards, placing Siwela firmly on the national stage. The Chardonnay MCC and the Sauvignon Blanc Sparkling complete a bubbly lineup that has become the brand's calling card.
The tasting room is located at 113 Scott Street in Schoemansville, Hartbeespoort, open Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00. It is an intimate space where guests can taste across the full range, enjoy cheese and biltong platters, or try a wine blending session.
But the experience that sets Siwela apart is the private bubbly boat cruise on Hartbeespoort Dam. Guests board a boat stocked with Siwela's sparkling wines and cruise for an hour and a half along the dam, with the ancient peaks of the Magaliesberg mountains as the backdrop. Pricing starts at R2,500 for two people and R3,600 for four. It is a wine experience unlike anything else in South Africa -- Cap Classique on open water, mountain views on every side, and the unhurried rhythm of the dam setting the pace.
The name Siwela carries weight. In IsiZulu it means crossing over, and Masoga has crossed boundaries that many in the South African wine industry once considered fixed. She built a brand from scratch, earned international recognition, and created a tasting destination that draws visitors from Johannesburg and Pretoria on weekends.
Siwela Wines is not a centuries-old estate or a sprawling farm. It is a modern, entrepreneurial wine brand built by a woman who brought science, courage and vision to an industry that has not always been inclusive. For visitors to Hartbeespoort, it is a destination that combines excellent wine with an experience that cannot be found anywhere else.
