Cilmor Wines sits at the foot of the Dewetsberg mountain in the Moordkuil ward of Worcester, where 22 different cultivars grow across 453 hectares of vineyard. The estate has been producing wine since the early 1990s and has built a reputation for award-winning wines crafted from one of the broadest varietal plantings in the Breede River Valley. The Moordkuil ward is a warm, sheltered pocket with deep alluvial soils irrigated by the Breede River system, and the Dewetsberg provides afternoon shade and cool evening breezes that help the grapes retain acidity -- a crucial factor in producing fresh, balanced wines from an inland region.
The winemaking programme is led by Quintin van der Westhuizen, whose philosophy centres on letting the Moordkuil terroir speak through each bottle. The warm Worcester days tempered by cool mountain breezes create conditions well suited to both white and red varieties, and Van der Westhuizen exploits the full breadth of the estate's plantings. His wines are released across three tiers: the Premium Collection, which showcases individual cultivars at their best; the Winemaker's Selection, a personal curation highlighting the unique characteristics of the Moordkuil region; and a Limited Edition range for small-batch bottlings. The Winemaker's Selection Sauvignon Blanc retails at around R110 per bottle, the Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blend at the same price, and the Pinot Noir -- an unusual variety for Worcester -- at approximately R125.
Cilmor is 100 percent Fairtrade Certified, making it one of the few fully accredited Fairtrade wine producers in the Worcester district. The certification covers the entire operation, from vineyard to bottle, ensuring that workers benefit directly from the international Fairtrade premium. This ethical commitment runs alongside a Wine Club that offers members news, discounts, and special offers.
The tasting room is open Monday to Friday from 09h00 to 16h30, and weekend visits can be arranged by appointment by calling 023 340 4141 or 083 627 7351. Mountain views of the Dewetsberg frame the experience, and visitors often pair a tasting with a meal at the on-site restaurant. A gift shop and online shop round out the retail offering, with nationwide delivery available.
Cilmor's Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc have earned particular recognition, and the estate is listed as a Chenin Blanc Specialist, Sauvignon Blanc Specialist, and an Award Winning Wine producer. The combination of traditional winemaking, a vast cultivar library, ethical Fairtrade production, and an accessible location on the R43 Villiersdorp Road makes Cilmor a quietly compelling stop on the Worcester Wine and Olive Route.
Winemaker Quintin van der Westhuizen leads the cellar at Cilmor, crafting wines that showcase the unique characteristics of the Moordkuil region. His Winemaker's Selection range is a personal curation of single-varietal and blend bottlings that highlight the terroir of this Worcester sub-ward.
